Background

Hi Candle! was born out of candle-making experimentation during the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020. The vision was to create a range of scented candles that were accessible in price point, featured unexpected fragrance combinations, and embraced a gender-neutral, playful identity.

Launching online in January 2021, the initial focus was to establish a strong e-commerce presence, followed by expansion into wholesale, supported by seasonal product releases.

Approach

I led the end-to-end development of the Hi Candle! brand, applying my creative and production experience to shape its identity and execution. The brand was designed to feel inclusive, characterful, and slightly nostalgic—balancing playfulness with a clean, considered aesthetic.

This direction was expressed across all touchpoints: a quirky, humanist typeface; a hand-drawn mascot inspired by mid-century children’s book illustrations; bold, colourful product photography captured by Mark Lobo; and a user-first e-commerce experience designed for simplicity and conversion.

Since launch, Hi Candle! has expanded into a number of boutique retailers across Victoria, including Pinky’s, Herbert’s Corner Store, Spring Hill Nursery and Cliffy’s Emporium.
